DONT KNOW HOW INTENTIONAL IT IS. (Therefore assume 100% intended) But right now everyone who isnt Anton looks VERY SIMILIAR To the inky blackness+ Spookiness of the Dada Beasts.
Also the eeriy symmetry of the GUARDS in panels six and seven creates a second row of the arch-holes featured on the bottom. Basically when not making SWORD X on your throat are they basically unobtrusive architecture? is that some cool stealthy Artmagic that Guards know? Or are they artificial constructs that I already pondered about so never mind
NO TODAY WE TALK OF SYMMETRY. Symmetry is held to be one of the classical standards of Beauty. And I mean Classical in the Greco-roman art history sort of way. There was Equations and stuff.
So now I wonder what sort of standards of Beauty Nevino maintains and encourages throughout the kingdom.. I’d assume something Classical or Modern, rejecting the grotesque and ideas like wabi-sabi.
While THE MASTER uses Collage which I am going to generally associate with Post-Modernism.
BACK IN THE DADA Fight Virgil calls the Dada an obsolete Idea or something. Basically calls it on being old washed up hasbeen crap… not sure where I was going with that.
of course in a world of desolate islands floating in muck… I wonder where and what the standards of beauty would emerge from? Are their flowers and plants someplaces? beautiful birds with elegant plumages? or Possibly it is the absence of natural “Beauty” that is what causes such dependence on Art, to provide beauty in a world utterly devoid of it…
Virgil’s ear pops over his beret when his head sinks. I assume he gave an ear wiggle of assent that Anton was with him…
Woah, thanks for informing me of the existence of wabi-sabi. That’s pretty interesting! Mmmmm new art movement…….
Also, was it clear that Virgil is nodding? In the first draft I had a big “NOD” sound effect in that panel to make it stupid obvious, but then thought the pose itself would get the idea across.
I learned about it from King of the Hill!
Yeah I got it was a slight nod. Its just so DARK AND HATEFUL, I can barely concieve anything positive coming of it. I think the way the Guards respond, resuming indifference says everything about it.
If there is any point that I’d call really confusing, I’d say its how his nose gets covered. As it kind of forms the line that changes the most obviously with a Nod, but because it disappears into his coat, it becomes more of an ominous lurky type motion than a mechanical head bob….
if any of that made sense….
The nod is clear. Virgil looks so mysterious in those two panels

Okay now that I have read everything up to this chapter I do have to say that I enjoy this comic a lot. If not for the fact that Anton is relatable to myself (by that I mean doubt in myself as an artist..not living in a dystopian art jargon filled world), than it is relatable because I am going to an art school and everyone (from Nevino to Virgil) has that whole arrogance about themselves being great artists that is clearly evident at my school.
Anyway I can’t wait to see more comic book pages, and Anton is pretty darn awesome to deal with people like that. I just couldnt ^^;
